Reframing Disability: Challenging Concepts of Normality

Programming Grants

Disability Resources subscribes to a new view of disability which has evolved from the disability rights movement, is explored by Disability Studies scholars and places disability in social, cultural and political contexts. Under this paradigm, disability is viewed not as a deficit but as a natural human difference and access is explored though the redesign of campus environments using the tenets of universal design. To support this view, Disability Resources is providing "Programming Grants" for projects which will promote new definitions and conceptualizations of disability as well as principles of universal design. Average grant amounts range from $500 to $1500 and will be awarded based on strongest, broadest impact of the proposed activity or project.

Disability Resources strengthens the University of Arizona by advocating an inclusive campus community. In keeping with this mission Disability Resources engages in the following:

  • Provide leadership in implementing the principles of universally accessible design and promoting new conceptualizations of disability
  • Structure and deliver services in ways that promote individual development, identity, pride, and self-determination
  • Increase access and opportunities for people with disabilities through collaboration with University and community partners
  • Promote a broad definition of diversity that honors and appreciates disability as an integral part of human experience
