Medical Examinations and Qualification Standards for Employment

The University may condition a job offer on the satisfactory result of a post-offer medical examination or medical inquiry if this is required of all entering employees in the same job category. Occupational Health, Campus Health Center, will conduct or coordinate all such examinations.

Departments may not refuse to hire an individual who has received a conditional offer of employment on the basis of the results of a medical examination unless the results demonstrate the candidate is unable to perform the essential functions of the job, with a reasonable accommodation, or that an accommodation would pose an undue hardship. The University department will make these decisions only after consulting with the Disability Resource Center. A post-offer medical examination also may disqualify an individual if the University can demonstrate that the individual would pose a “direct threat” in the workplace.

The University will not use standards, tests or criteria that screen out or tend to screen out an applicant with a disability, or impact the status of current employees with a disability. The basis for denying or terminating employment will be job-related and consistent with business necessity.
