Career / Athletic Highlights: Coach Hughes has coached many sports. He started coaching football in 1994 when he was a student at San Diego State University. As a football coach he has coached at the high school, college and internationally. While in Australia getting his Masters degree in Education with an emphasis on sport psychology, Coach Hughes met with and worked with a para-lympic wheelchair racer and quad rugby coach. This individual made sport wheelchairs and in 1999 Coach Hughes got his first taste of wheelchair sports. Enjoying the sport so much that he accepted a scholarship from the University of Arizona to play wheelchair basketball for the Wildcats from 2004-2006. Upon the birth of his first child (Shannon Rose) Coach Hughes decided to move back into coaching and accepted the position of Head Wheelchair Track Coach here at the UofA.
Career / Athletic Goals: To qualify as many racers for elite standards as possible. To recruit the top wheelchair racers in the world and to bring UofA track to a level of competition not seen before. To promote education, sportmanship and interest amoung all wheelchair sports.
Interests / Hobbies: Playing and coaching wheelchair sports. Promotion of better adaptive equipment (medical) in Arizona. Traveling the world.
