Wheelchair & Equipment Shop

The Wheelchair and Adaptive Equipment Shop, is available to any DRC student with need for disability-related adaptive equipment. The intent is to minimize the amount of "down time" due to mechanical problems or other needs. Students are financially responsible for replacement parts. Assistance is provided through consultation, vendor referral, mechanical maintenance or repair, and short-term equipment loans.

Some commonly asked questions regarding equipment:

  • Are gel batteries better than acid batteries?
  • What is the proper air pressure to keep in my tires?
  • Are tire inserts better than tubes?
  • How often should I check the water in my battery?

We will provide you with the names and numbers of local or distant vendor sources for parts, repairs, and further mechanical advice such as:

  • Help for those wheel locks that don't hold
  • Fluttering caster wheels
  • Decreased power
  • What to do about that squealing wheel bearing
  • "This company carries this battery for less money and their number is . . ."
  • "This 1-800 number will give you the technical assistance for company X and can answer that question . . ."
  • "This vendor may have a loaner . . . give them a call"

During DRC business hours, we'll get you moving as quickly as possible should your equipment breakdown while on campus. Call the Shop at 626-5496. As a new student, please drop by the Shop to meet us and become acquainted with our services.
