Alberto Guzman

Alberto Guzman is a graduate candidate at the University of Illinois at Chicago, pursuing a Doctoral Degree in Disability Studies. Mr. Guzman is interested in the nexus of Disability Studies and disability service provision in post-secondary education. He currently is a Visiting Instructor at the University of Arizona (Tucson).  There, he co-teaches courses in Media and Disability and Disability Perspectives and Narratives.  Mr. Guzman was recently elected for a 3-year term, to the Board of Directors of the Society for Disability Studies. In addition, Mr. Guzman previously worked at the national Center for Capacity Building on Minorities with Disability Research as a research specialist. In this capacity, he provided program evaluation technical assistance to agencies offering services to minorities with disabilities. He also worked at the College Connection Project, a research demonstration program that aims to improve the success of students with learning disabilities to enter college, stay in college, complete vocational tracks and obtain jobs. For his master’s thesis, Mr. Guzman did a comparison study between Hispanics and a random national sample on issues relating to the acquisition of assistive technology for persons with disabilities. He recently served as the President of the Disability Studies Student Counsel, the vice-president of the Students with Disabilities Union and as a member of the Chancellor’s Committee on the Status of Persons with Disabilities at the University of Illinois at Chicago. After the completion of his doctoral degree, Mr. Guzman strives to have an academic appointment working in research on education, mentoring and other issues related to the advancement and integration of individuals with disabilities.
