Dr. Alan Strauss earned his Masters degree in Rehabilitation Counseling, and his Doctorate in Rehabilitation from the University of Arizona (UA). Currently, he is an Assistant Director of Disability Resources at UA, coordinating programs and services related to disability and employment.

 

As a member of the executive committee of the Disability Studies Collaborative at the UA, and as an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the College of Education, Dr. Strauss teaches undergraduate courses in Rehabilitation and in Disability Studies. Additionally, Dr. Strauss is a co-investigator with the Sonoran University Center of Excellence in Developmental Disability (Sonoran UCEDD) where he provides leadership in achieving goals related to developing an interdisciplinary degree in Disability Studies, and to increasing employment opportunities statewide for individuals with disabilities. Dr. Strauss is the current chair of the Arizona Governors Statewide Rehabilitation Council.

 

Dr. Strauss has presented widely on disability services in higher education, as well as on the intersection between disability studies and disability services. His research interests are diverse and include: the application of theory and research emerging from the field of disability studies to disability services; the meaning that undergraduate students make of the phenomenon of disability, and examining employer-based barriers to employment for individuals with disabilities.
