Reasonable Accommodations

Reasonable accommodations are modifications or adjustments to a course, program, service, activity, or facility that provide a qualified individual with a disability an equal opportunity to obtain the same benefit or to attain the same program access or to enjoy equal benefits and privileges as those available to a similarly situated individuals without a disability.

The University is obligated to make reasonable accommodations only to the known limitations of otherwise qualified individuals with disabilities. The University is not obligated to provide accommodations that would fundamentally alter the essential components of a course of study or accommodations that are unduly burdensome.  Providing accommodations and ensuring access should never be done at the expense of the essential standards applied to all students.

The determination of reasonable accommodations is made on an individual basis and should involve all parties to ensure an understanding of the essential components of the activity and individual situations.  Reasonable accommodations are determined by examining:

  • Barriers resulting from the interaction between the disability and campus courses, programs, services, & activities;
  • Possible accommodations that may remove the barriers;
  • Whether or not the individual has equal access without accommodations;
  • Whether or not the essential elements of the program of study or class requirements are fundamentally altered by the accommodation
  • Whether or not accommodations would result in undue hardship for the institution.
