  1. Before classes begin, Disability Resources may contact you to inform you that you will have a deaf student and interpreter/CART reporter in your class. The interpreter/ CART reporter will go over any questions you may have at that time. We will also give you a contact name and number for questions that might come up during the semester.
  2. Interpreters follow the Code of Ethics of the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc. CART reporters are bound by a similar set of ethics founded by the National Court Reporters Association. Confidentiality is a major tenet of these ethical standards and prevent the interpreter/CART reporter from discussing the student or their work assignments. We encourage you to address issues with deaf students directly, as you would with any other student.
  3. Interpreters/CART reporters will discuss the most appropriate seating arrangement with you and the student at the beginning of the semester. They will probably seat themselves near the front of the class. This seating arrangement allows the student to take advantage of all visual cues available in the classroom: the facial expressions and speech movements of the instructor, and information on the blackboard. While you may find your students watching the interpreter/CART reporter during the first class period, the novelty soon wears off.
  4. Interpreters/CART reporters will introduce themselves to you at the beginning of the semester and provide any information you may need on the interpreting process or deafness in general.
  5. Interpreters/CART reporters may not have a background in the course content. Any information you can provide regarding technical vocabulary will be helpful. This becomes more important when a substitute interpreter/CART reporter is assigned to the class.
  6. Portable lights are available for occasions when films, slides, etc., are used.
  7. Interpreters/CART reporters will not provide service when the student does not attend class. Students who are late for class will find their interpreters/CART reporters waiting in the hall for a set length of time.
