Course Substitution Deadlines

Students requiring substitutions of course work as a reasonable accommodation, must request this accommodation through the Disability Resource Center according to the following deadlines:

  • By the end of the fourth semester for students entering the University as a freshman
  • By the end of the second semester for students entering the University as a transfer student

The approval or denial of a course substitution is a two-step process requiring both an initial review of your disability documentation and accommodation request by professional staff of the Disability Resource Center, and ultimately approval or denial by your major department or college. To request a course substitution you must complete each of the following steps:

  1. Meet with your Access Consultant at the Disability Resource Center to discuss your need for a course substitution and to receive the application forms. If you are not currently served by the Disability Resource Center or if you have not been previously diagnosed with a disability, call 621-3268 TTY/V and schedule an intake appointment with a Access Consultant.
  2. Meet with an academic advisor in your college or major to discuss the potential impact of a substitution on your degree program and to obtain his/her signature on the appropriate form.
  3. Fully complete and sign the application forms and include any additional documentation of disability not already on file with the Disability Resource Center.
  4. Include with your application forms a narrative statement explaining the reasons for your request and adding any relevant details concerning any previous experiences with similar course work.

Your Access Consultant will review your request and provide their recommendation to both you and your academic advisor. Note that a positive recommendation for a course substitution from the Disability Resource Center is only the first step in the process and does not constitute approval of a substitution as a reasonable accommodation for any given degree major or specific course. Final approval must come from the academic department or college in which you are majoring. You must contact your advisor to determine substitute courses and finalize the accommodation. Please refer to the catalogue policy on course substitutions available on line at http://catalog.arizona.edu/2002-03/policies/substitu.htm

It is important that if you require a course substitution as a reasonable accommodation that you speak with your Access Consultant in a timely manner so that you can complete your request by the above deadlines. Please contact your Access Consultant with any questions about this type of accommodation, or to initiate the request process.
