Process for Self-Identifying Disability Accommodations to Instructors

When students utilize reasonable accommodations for courses it is usually necessary to inform instructors.
The University has created a process for this self-identification that is Web-based and simple for both students and instructors to access:

  • Students log onto a secure Webpage, select the courses in which they will use accommodations and request that instructors in those courses be notified
  • This request:
    • Creates a course-specific and secure Website that includes student names and accommodations and provides DRC contact information
    • Generates an e-mail to the instructor identifying student (s) who may utilize accommodations and provides the URL for the Website
  • Instructors log onto the secure Website using an individualized password
  • If additional students in the same course use this process, their names and accommodations are added to the same page so that they can be viewed by the instructor at any time.  The system does not generate additional e-mail messages every time a new student self-identifies through this process.

Since students initiate e-mails of identification to instructors, it is possible that instructors may have more students with disabilities in their courses than those who choose to identify themselves.  If a course is designed in a way that negates the need for accommodations for some students, those students may not need to use accommodations or identify themselves.  Instructors are under no obligation to provide accommodations to students who do not self-identify.

Even though formal notification is sent through this Web-based process, students are encouraged to meet with their instructors and likewise, instructors encouraged to contact students to discuss course requirements, accommodations, and access.
