Glee: A Critical Discussion of Disability and Queerness in the MediaTogether with LGBTQ Affairs, DRC sponsored a "dine and discuss" event on April 16, 2012. Approximately 40 students came together to watch an episode of Glee that grapples with issues of disability and queer identity. This particular episode, "Wheels", has been hotly debated in the media and within the disability community for its representation of disability issues relative to identity, access, equity and community. Students, staff, and community members participated in a lively conversation on how diversity issues, specifially disability and queerness, are reporesented in the media and compared dynamics and themes across both the disability and queer communities. We look forward to continued collaboration and more great dialogue. |
