Student Identification
Many course designs and/or requirements present barriers to students with disabilities. While not a perfect solution, reasonable accommodations can provide access and must be made to qualified students.
When students use reasonable accommodations to fully participate, University policy states that they are responsible for informing their instructors of their affiliation with Disability Resources and the accommodations that appear to be reasonable based on disability documentation. The identification system is electronic and described at http://drc.arizona.edu/teach/webroster.html
Instructors should be aware that:
- there may be students with disabilities who chose not to identify themselves; the course instructor has no obligation to provide accommodations to these students;
- if the instructor’s assistance is required to implement any accommodations, additional information will be provided either from Disability Resources or the student;
- the DRC Website that identifies students and their possible accommodations will be updated regularly as additional students recognize barriers and plan to use accommodations;
- DRC encourages students to meet with their instructors to discuss accommodations and course participation.
- DRC encourages instructors to contact their students who identify to demonstrate their interest in assuring that all course information is accessible.
