Instructor Notification of Students' Disability Accommodations

When students must use reasonable accommodations to fully participate in a class (to mitigate access issues caused by the interaction of their disability and course requirements), they are responsible for informing their instructors of the accommodations that Disability Resources has determined are reasonable.

Course instructors access this information via the University’s WebRoster system.  A small Disability Resource Center icon (see square image to the left on this page) appears in the upper right corner of each Course Roster Webpage. Clicking on that icon will provide a list of students who have asked to be identified and lists of the accommodations each student might use.

• This new access point for information on student accommodations provides additional security over the previous system in that it is based on the University’s NetID system.
• This system also is consistent for all classes at the University and can be accessed as soon as the WebRoster system is loaded for each semester.

As in the past,

• Student's initiate the process so that they can select the courses in which they will need to use accommodations.
• There may be additional students with disabilities in the course who have not chosen to identify themselves; the course instructor has no obligation to provide accommodations for these students.
• If the instructor’s assistance is required to implement any accommodation, he or she will receive additional information from Disability Resources or from the student; the instructor is not required to do anything based only on the original notification.
  

Even though formal notification is sent through this Web-based process, Disability Resource staff encourages students to meet with their instructors to discuss accommodations and how their disability might impact access to the course. Additionally, we encourage instructors to contact the student to demonstrate their interest in assuring that all course information is accessible.
