The Instructor Role
Access is a University-wide responsibility. Instructors play a major role in responding to the instructional needs of all students. Providing access to the courses the University offers requires the active participation of each instructor and is supported and encouraged at every level of the administration. The following is a brief list of the minimum steps instructor must take to ensure access for disabled students who are enrolled in their classes:
- Be willing to work with students to address their accommodation issues and include the required/recommended disability statement on your syllabus:
- Assure recommended testing accommodations are available to your students in the classroom or your department OR provide DRC test administration information and a copy of your exam in a timely manner (if you would like assistance in administering exams with accommodations).
- Be willing to re-locate your class if you are scheduled to teach in an inaccessible classroom.
- Allow Sign Language Interpreters appropriate seating within your classroom if you have deaf or hard of hearing students who require this service.
- Assure that all videos shown in your class are captioned.
- Post class notes on an accessible course Website OR assist students in locating a volunteer, classmate note-taker if requested
- Identify your reading material 4 weeks prior to the start of the semester. The DRC or a student may contact you for copies of any print materials used in class so that Braille, tape or electronic-text can be prepared prior to the beginning of classes. (See printed materials in alaternative formats.)
- Arrange for accessible transportation for field trips if you have students who need it by working with the student and the DRC.
- Design any course Websites to be assessable to screen reading technology for blind and visually impaired students. Assistance is available from DRC.
- Follow-up on any concerns about recommended accommodations by contacting Disability Resources at uadrc@email.arizona.edu.
