University Expectations for Instructors
Access is a University-wide responsibility. Providing access to the academic environment requires the active participation of each instructor and is supported and encouraged at every level of the administration.
The following are minimum steps instructors must take to ensure access for disabled students who are enrolled in their classes. Disability Resource staff is available to provide support and/or consult on any of these issues.
- Include the required access statement on all course syllabi
- Be available to collaborate with disabled students and Disability Resources to create an accessible class experience
- Assure recommended testing accommodations are available to qualified students. You may either provide accommodations in the classroom or department OR arrange for Disability Resources to administer your exams with accommodations
- Be willing to re-locate your class if there is a student enrolled in the class who cannot access the classroom
- Allow Sign Language Interpreters or CART writers appropriate seating in the classroom if they are scheduled to work with one of the students
- Assure that all videos shown in the class are captioned when a deaf or hard of hearing student is registered
- Post class notes on an accessible course Website OR assist students in locating a volunteer, classmate note-taker if requested
- Identify your reading material early so that alternative format materials can be made available promptly
- Arrange for accessible transportation for field trips if you have students who request it
