Classroom Activities and Field Trips
The University of Arizona is committed to creating an inclusive and welcoming experience for all of its diverse community members. We strive for University events and experiences to be universally designed, or usable by all people to the greatest extent possible without the need for individual modifications. Identifying and removing barriers to access throughout the event planning process results in inclusive and welcoming experiences.

Classroom Activities and Room Layout
When planning classroom activities, it is important to consider the accessibility and layout of the classroom that is being used. Classroom type, layout, and furniture varies greatly in campus classrooms and can impact whether students have an accessible and inclusive experience.
Information about access in each centrally scheduled classroom is available on the Classroom Access Information page. For non-centrally scheduled spaces, such as the Student Union and department controlled spaces, contact the individual department to discuss access.
For interactive or collaborative activities, we recommend these types of classrooms:
- Collaborative Learning Spaces
- Flat classrooms with movable tables and chairs that offer a choice of seating throughout the room.
Avoid these types of rooms:
- Tiered or sloped lecture halls, if your activities will require students to move around the room.
- Flat classrooms with furniture that is not movable. In these classrooms, the furniture is often arranged in a way that does not provide enough space for all students to navigate the room or collaborate on activities.
- Flat classrooms that have movable desk armchairs instead of tables. In these classrooms there is usually not enough space to arrange the furniture in a way that would provide adequate space for all students to navigate the room or collaborate on activities, even if the furniture isn't bolted down.
Even when you are not planning interactive or collaborative activities, please consider the following:
- Accessible Tables: Flat classrooms with desk armchairs should have an accessible table in the room. Please do not use the accessible table to place papers or other items.
- Classroom Diagrams: In flat classrooms with movable desk armchairs (i.e., not bolted to the floor) there will be a diagram at the podium that shows how to arrange the desks in a manner that provides disability access.
- If the room is not in this set-up way when you arrive, please arrange the room according to the diagram, unless you require a different set-up for that day, in which case please return the room to the accessible arrangement in the diagram at the end of class.

If there are any barriers to disability access in the room you are using, please contact DRC at (520) 621-3268 or email@example.com. DRC can work with Room and Course Scheduling to move classes to a different location when barriers to access are present.
